From time to time, I like to remind our readers about routine maintenance procedures for their PC. Just a few maintenance items, completed on a regular basis, can keep your computer in tip top shape and help you get the most out of your PC. Maintenance time is here again and we’ll keep the article short, so you have more time to perform these tasks or pat yourself on the back for having them completed already.
Below, you’ll find a list of recommended tasks that should be completed regularly. In most cases, we’ve already written an extended article, covering the subject, and have provided the link so you can read more. Also, we have links to the latest version of the software programs listed available on the JumpstartMyPC.com’s Tools page and they are all FREE.
- Defrag – Use a program like Auslogics Disk Defrag to keep your hard drive(s) in shape. article
- Restart – Leaving your PC on around the clock is great for updates and scheduled tasks, but don’t forget to restart regularly. article
- Update – Are your programs (including Windows) up to date with the latest versions. There might be a security or bug fix waiting for you. article
- Scan – Have you run a full system scan to check for malware, spyware, viruses or other pesky issues? Let Spybot Search and Destroy check your system.
- Clean – Clean out those old files and temporary directories with a program like CCleaner to keep your system from getting bogged down.
- Registry Cleaning – If you have installed, uninstalled or deleted anything lately, you probably have a “dirty registry.” Use Abexo Registry Cleaner to take care of any issues. article
This seems like a lot of work, but keep in mind that most of these tasks can be automated. Each piece of software must be set individually, but then it is “Set it and Forget it!” Take the time to “set it” now and you won’t have to worry about it later.
