Having a Good Antivirus Program Could Keep You Out of Jail

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

protect_291_20081010-105931Long ago, I heard a compelling reason to password protect your router.  Until then, I had always left mine unprotected and really didn’t want to go through the hassle of setting up a password and worrying about getting people connected when I DID want them to use it.  But the day I heard that I could be held responsible for the surfing habits of another person, simply because they were using my internet connection, I went home and immediately enabled the security on my wireless router.

I can’t remember who told me this or why it came up, but in a recent discussion I heard a story of several people who were arrested for surfing child pornography sites and, in time, it turned out they had nothing to do with it.  Apparently, someone else had been using their wireless signal (without their knowledge I would suspect) to connect to the internet and view the sites in question.  I have yet to find an article proving this point exactly, but at the same time I am a bit nervous about typing the words “child” and “pornography” into Google.  Today, an article about a very similar scenario crossed my path.

CHECK ENGINE – Consider this Your PC Maintenance Reminder

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

imp08warninglights2From time to time, I like to remind our readers about routine maintenance procedures for their PC.  Just a few maintenance items, completed on a regular basis, can keep your computer in tip top shape and help you get the most out of your PC.  Maintenance time is here again and we’ll keep the article short, so you have more time to perform these tasks or pat yourself on the back for having them completed already.

Below, you’ll find a list of recommended tasks that should be completed regularly.  In most cases, we’ve already written an extended article, covering the subject, and have provided the link so you can read more.  Also, we have links to the latest version of the software programs listed available on the JumpstartMyPC.com’s Tools page and they are all FREE.

Slow and Steady Wins the Holiday Shopping Race

Monday, November 9th, 2009

black-friday-electronicsHoliday Shopping is upon us and last week we focused on creating wishlists so friends and family would know what to get you.  Now it is time to look on the other side of the wall and focus on the gift buying.  Traditionally, holiday shopping has been done between Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve.  Many shoppers begin their conquest the day after Thanksgiving and have managed to create the monster we now call Black Friday.  I honestly don’t remember this being such a big day 10 or 15 years ago, but NOW!!

Black Friday has become THE premier shopping day of the year.  Retailers, in their infinite wisdom, have made it impossible to have a Thanksgiving day without the rustle of papers and bargain-hunting conversations.  Shoppers now debate an afternoon nap and then a trip to the Best Buy to stand in line til the wee hours of the morning, just waiting for the doors to open and the madness to begin.  Who can blame them?  The prices are amazing and, given the current economic trouble, we would all like to save as much of our hard-earned cash as possible.  Luckily, Black Friday has grown to include a larger audience and the internet is now a prime shopping location for those who aren’t looking to lose sleep on a perfectly good day off.

Google Dashboard Summarizes Your Google Life

Friday, November 6th, 2009

DashyFor years, I have been a Google fan.  I remember the day I first entered google.com and was stopped in my tracks by the white space that presented itself.  It was… different!  At the time, I think something like 70% of all internet traffic started at Yahoo.com, but their page was getting a little cluttered and distracting.  I liked this new Google thing and I knew then that I had found my new entry point for the web.

Over the years, Google has added a multitude of services and I have tried many of them.  Their products are always clean, easy-to-use and almost always FREE (which I like a lot).  Because their products are FREE, I tried as many as I could find.  Gmail,  Google Reader,  Google Chat,  Google Calendar… The list goes on and on.  Over the last year, I actually had to start a folder of shortcuts for all of the different services that I was using.  I couldn’t remember how to get to half of them.  Enter Google Dashboard.

Online Wish Lists – In Depth Comparison of 5 Services

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

Yesterday, we detailed the use of online wish lists in organizing and sharing Christmas/holiday gift lists.  The article 51 Days Until Christmas – What’s On Your Wish List was a popular one and we received some great feedback from a few of our readers, so I decided to dig deeper and reveal some additional information that might be helpful for you all.

I began testing the different online wish list services yesterday afternoon and through much of the morning.  On each of the 5 sites we mentioned yesterday, I created a profile and added gifts to my list.  I also took the time to search and view the lists of other users, so I could get a feel for things from both sides of the fence.  All of the sites I reviewed were functional and easy-to-use, but I realized that each user might be looking for some very specific things out of a service like this.  I analyzed each site and compared them to put together a list of features that I found important.  Below are my findings.

51 Days Until Christmas – What’s On Your Wish List

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

michaels-christmas-list-2007-760424We are approaching that time of year.  Heck, for some the time has already come.  Christmas/holiday shopping is upon us and we will all be asked (or asking) that age old question “what do you want this year?”  You might already have some ideas or you might be completely clueless, but one thing is for certain.  You don’t have it written down and you probably will never get that far.  Surprise your friends and family this year with a new response by using an online wish list.

Online wish lists are not a new idea.  Gift registries have been around forever for things like weddings and baby showers.  When the internet really started to take off and big retailers like Target, Best Buy and Amazon.com hit the web, they made it possible for you to add items to a “wish list.”  Unfortunately, you had to pick all your items from their store and then find a way to share that list with friends and family.  Not an easy task and, not surprisingly, I don’t think these applications ever got much use.

Update Trackers Keep You and Your PC From Falling Behind

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

In the past, we have written about the importance of keeping Windows updated and running smoothly.  Just yesterday, we commented on the yellow shield and how Microsoft’s Windows gives you the proper “warning lights” to let you know when there are updates for Windows.  But what about your other programs?  They are updated by the manufacturer from time-to-time as well.  How do you know when to update them?

Unfortunately Windows did not include any programs, other than Microsoft products, into the “yellow shield” update warnings nor did they include any standard feature for monitoring the updates of other programs on your PC.  The only warning most programs issue occurs when you open the application to use it.  With some programs you are greeted with the standard “there is a newer version of this ….. would you like to update now?”  How inconvenient is that.  You are in the middle of something and your options are to wait 5-10 minutes for the update or skip it (which is what most people end up doing).  For those programs that do not prompt you when an update is available, you would have to search for the update yourself.  What would make you think to even look for an update in the first place?

Warning Lights on Your PC Shouldn’t be Ignored

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

You’ve done it or you know someone who has.  That pesky oil light came on in the car and you ignored it.  You kept telling yourself that getting an oil change was high on your list of things to do, but distraction after distraction kept you from making it to the garage to get it done.  There is a lot more to this story, but I think we all know where it is going and the ending is not a happy one.  You now know there are consequences for putting off routine maintenance on your car.  The same can be said for your computer and, just like in your car, there are warning “lights” to keep you in check.

The system tray (lower right hand corner of Windows, where the clock is) serves as a holding area for system functions such as anti-virus settings, printer, modem, sound volume, battery status, and more.  For the most part, we all ignore this area, unless we are checking the time or we see some sort of pop-up or cloud with text in it.  Even then, there are many people who ignore the warnings that come from this area.  It’s just like that oil light.  “I’ll get to it” or “I know I need to take care of that, but….”  Ignoring these warnings can be dangerous to your PC and the security of your files and personal information.
