I’ll be honest. Today’s article is coming together as I write this. Why? Because I am completely distracted by buzz surrounding today’s big Apple Event. If you have read my articles before, you might find this a bit odd, considering the entire focus of the JumpstartMyPC.com blog and web site is PC’s. Regardless, I am excited and here are the reasons why:
1) Apple is sexy – Yeah, that’s right. I said it. In a land of black and silver (the new beige apparently), there is white. Apple began making sleek, sexy changes to computing with their product lines years ago and they seem to just keep getting better at it. Every PC manufacturer on the planet is trying to capture what Apple has and most of them fail every time. If I could make the switch to a Mac, I would do it. The only problem is I am a PC.
2) Surprises are fun – The entire world will be touched by the Apple magic today. You might not even be interested, but you will hear about the event today from a co-worker, news program or web site. The coverage, which begins in a few short hours, will be streamed, quoted and repeated non-stop throughout the day. The question is still “What will Apple reveal.” Amazingly, in a time where every tidbit of information is available on the web before it is even available to you (movies, music, books) Apple has managed to keep the surprise under wraps. They could be rolling out a new phone, a tablet PC, a change to the carriers of the iPhone 3GS. Who knows?
3) Innovation – No matter what is revealed today, it will no doubt include cutting-edge technology. My money is on a tablet PC, which I hope will be called the Slate. If I am right, this tablet PC will revolutionize computing. Sure, there are tablet computers on the market already, but will they include the feature set that has been running the rumor-mill for the last few months? I doubt it. The device, if it really exists, will be a truly mobile platform. Like a netbook (notebook computer with built in cellular card for internet without wires or wi-fi) the device will keep you connected on the go. The difference. It won’t be a netbook, which is also a stripped down version of a “real PC.”
4) The future – I might not ever own an iPhone or a Slate, but these advancements by Apple will lead to new designs and ideas from all of the other manufacturers as well. Just look at the iPhone. It came out almost 3 years ago and every smart phone since then has tried to copy at least one element of the iPhone. Full screen displays, minimal buttons, sleek housing, applications that can be installed for free or purchased from an online store. Apple came up with all of this. Whatever they come out with today will be copied and will no doubt change computing for all of us.
So kick back, relax and see if I am right. Actually, just see how many times you hear about Apple today and then tell me you aren’t a little bit amazed at how they garner the attention of so many people by releasing something that isn’t free. In fact, it will probably be more expensive than any “competition” out there.
