Surf Safely with Web of Trust for FREE

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

WOT LogoYesterday, we warned you about the nearly 10,000 passwords that were stolen and posted online by cybercriminals.  Further information indicates that these passwords were stolen via a fake Hotmail website, identical to the real thing.  This phishing scam tricked users into entering their email address and password. Twenty-four hours later a similar list of thousands of Google Gmail, AOL, Yahoo Mail, Comcast and Earthlink accounts were revealed as well.

Scams like these are becoming more and more common.  As PC and internet users we have just a few choices.  We can avoid using the internet completely (not likely) or arm ourselves with the right tools to prevent malware attacks, spyware trickery, phishing scams, etc.  In the case of the Hotmail passwords, a simple anti-virus or spyware program would NOT have prevented the crime.  No software was installed and these programs would not have sent up any flares to warn us of the potential danger.  That’s why we need a program like My Web of Trust (WOT).

Browser Wars - from informationmadness.com

Which browser is better?  An ongoing debate in the computer world and one that you and your friends or co-workers may have already had.  Internet Explorer was the only game in town for a long time, but other choices have emerged to give the end user both a choice and a reason for debate.  The list of browsers goes on and on, but the most widely used are Internet Explorer (IE), Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari (for Macs) and Opera.

I initially set out to research and then provide you with some cold, hard facts about why one browser is better than the other, but that proved to be rather difficult.  It seems that most of the online information I could find was strictly personal preference.  Since that is the case, I am going to provide you with my own preference and experiences.  That said, I am married to Firefox, with a Google Chrome mistress.  Let me explain further.

WWW LockOnline shopping.  To some, this is the only way to go (yours truly) and for others these words bring forth images of masked internet bandits, stealing their credit card numbers and identity.  The truth is, there are risks in everything we do, but with a few words of wisdom and a few minutes of your time, you can feel at ease with internet shopping and save a boatload of money in the process.

ShareThis makes sharing easy

The amount of content on the internet grows every second of every day.  As I post this blog, there are thousands of others doing the exact same thing.  Many of those “bloggers” are likely contributing their own opinions or even new facts to the web.  You might stumble upon these blogs or ideas in a number of ways: Facebook, Twitter, Google searches, JumpstartMyPC.com, etc.  Occasionally you are going to come across an article or blog post that you really want to share with a friend.  What then?

Until recently, people have shared web site addresses (URL’s) via email or even verbally.  With the success of Facebook and Twitter, millions have found new ways to share information with friends and family.  And now, there are hundreds of sites that allow you to quickly share information with others on their “network.”  There is one tool however that combines all of these ideas and more.  That tool is ShareThis.

Don’t take the scenic route. Find a shortcut.

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

I’m sure there were a few readers that did some traveling over the long, holiday weekend.  If you did, you most certainly found yourself looking to shave off a few minutes during that trip back home.  Thanks to the low-cost of GPS units today, you may have even had the right tool to find that shortcut.  This is exactly what we tried to do on our long car trip home and it got me thinking about how we could help you in our first, post-holiday blog.

There are several layers to using a computer and one of those layers seems to elude many people.  I’m talking about keyboard shortcuts!  Keyboard shortcuts (using a combination of keys to perform a task) are just one of the many time-saving tools that you can use on any computer.  It may even seem silly at first, considering how simple it is to use a mouse, but once you get the hang of it you will realize how much easier these keyboard shortcuts will make your life.
