Kicks – The Coolest Thing You Didn’t Know You Needed

Thursday, August 25th, 2011

Every so often, an idea comes along that makes you think “I never realized I needed this before, but I have to have it now.”  For me, the latest of these profound moments came in the form of a new invention from my friends over at BlueLounge called simply Kicks.

“Protect your iPad or tablet without hiding its beautiful design with our Kicks: Small, thin, silicone-rubber rails that prevent your iPad from slipping, scratching and damage. The protective rails run along the backside, providing minimal safekeeping for your valuable life tool. Adheres to your device using 3M Damage-Free adhesive. Easy to use and apply, even comes off without leaving any marks.” – BlueLounge product page.

I found out about Kicks earlier this week and quickly placed my order.  At $11.95 (plus shipping) for 2 pairs, these great new add-ons won’t break the bank and the BlueLounge track record made clicking on the Buy Now button a no-brainer.  I’ve already purchased several items from their catalog, including the CableDrop (featured here), CoolFeet and Refresh.

It’s Now or Never – Holiday Wish Lists are Due

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

One month from today hoards of shoppers will storm the Black Friday sales of local department stores and malls.  These warriors of the holiday season will be armed with only their shopping cart and a list of items to pick up for their family members and friends.  If you are on one of those lists, you have to ask yourself what exactly will someone be buying for you OR you could prepare everyone you know by supplying them with a wish list of items that you REALLY want.

If someone slid a piece of paper in front of you right now and said “give me a list of items you would want to unwrap this holiday season,” would you be able to do it?  Better yet, would you be able to provide a range of items and an idea of what they cost?  Honestly, Grandma is probably not going to buy you that new iPad, so you better have some other options for her to choose from.  Putting together a list like this takes more than a few minutes, and that is where an online holiday wish list comes into play.

FollowFriday – Friday August 20, 2010 – BACK-TO-SCHOOL

Friday, August 20th, 2010
FollowFriday : On any given Friday, thousands upon thousands (maybe even millions) of Twitter users enter the hashtag #FollowFriday (or #FF), followed by one or more “mentions.” The idea is for users to share the names of other “interesting people” that they follow and think you should too. These recommendations serve as positive comment cards for the digitally inclined.

JumpstartMyPC.com has decided to bring FollowFriday to our blog. Read on and, if you are so inclined, add these “interesting people” to your own list.

Tax Free Weekend Sounds Great, But is it Worth the Trouble?

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

It’s back-to-school time here in the U.S. and that can mean only one thing… shopping.  Yes, the age-old tradition of back-to-school shopping is in full swing and, for many parents out there, the final window of opportunity will be closing this weekend.   The state of Texas has stepped in to offer a “Sales Tax Holiday” this weekend (August 20-22), a program also offered in many other states throughout the country, but is it enough to lure and your family away from the A/C and out into the heat of summer?

With the highest sales tax in the U.S. hovering at about 10.75% (California), you have to ask yourself if the savings are worth the effort.  Crowded stores, long-lines, uncooperative kids and driving all over town might save you that 10%, but what if you could save more from the comfort of your own home or office?  I think it is possible to save on your back-to-school shopping and, if you start today, you can still have your student(s) stocked up and ready to head off to their first day.

Don’t Just Toss it in a Bag….. GRID-IT!!!

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

If you have ever taken your laptop with you on a trip, you’ve had this issue.  If you’ve ever taken more than one gadget (iPod, PSP, GameBoy, Camera) to work, you’ve been frustrated by this issue.  If you’ve ever used a laptop or messenger bag to transport your tech, you’ve fought this issue.  Carrying any kind of electronic device(s) means carrying the power cable and any/all other accessories with you wherever you go.  As soon as the second item hits your bag, things get complicated.

Cables tangle, screens get scratched and everything in your bag drops straight to the bottom.  This makes finding any one item next to impossible (without dumping the contents of the entire bag) and, most likely, it is going to shorten the life and look of your gadgets and devices.  For any tech/gadget nerd, this is just not acceptable and, if you are anything like me, you want to take care of the items that you paid so much for.  There is a bit of pride in owning an iPod that is 2-years old, but looks like you just bought it.  Throw-in the fact that “no scratches” and “like new” make great tag lines for any product you want to sell on eBay, and you’ve got yourself a good set of reasons for taking care of your gear.

Last Day for Online Specials – Father’s Day and Toy Story 3

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

Over the last couple of weeks, we have covered both Father’s Day Gift Shopping and How to Get FREE Tickets to See Toy Story 3.  While most readers are painfully aware of the date (and the limited time between now and the weekend), it never hurts to send a gentle reminder out to those who might just be too busy to have spent any time on either of these.  Today marks the last day that you can order anything online and expect to receive it before the weekend, without paying overnight fees.

Toy Story 3 Starts Friday – Wanna See it for FREE?

Monday, June 14th, 2010

Last week I posted an article titled Manage Your Growing Disc Collection, in which I talked about physical storage of home movies, music CD’s, etc.  While researching and organizing my own collection I came across my copies of Toy Story and Toy Story 2 (on Blu-Ray) and realized that I had not taken advantage of my FREE Movie Ticket offer.  Realizing that the release of the latest installment of the Toy Story franchise was only days away, I immediately followed the instructions provided and, within minutes, I was printing our tickets to see Toy Story 3.  As it turns out, there is more than one way to get these FREE tickets, and I want to share the details with the JumpstartMyPC.com audience.

Manage Your Growing Disc Collection – Tools and Tricks

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

The compact disc (CD) was originally introduced to the world in 1982 and, since that switch to the 12 cm wide (standard size) disc, there have been numerous formats released in the same size and shape.  CD’s, DVD’s, Blu-Ray and HD DVDs, a multitude of computer writable discs, plus video games for consoles like the XBOX, XBOX360, Playstation 3, Wii, etc., have taken over and it seems this format will be here for many years to come.  Even though most of us didn’t purchase or begin collecting these optical discs until the mid-90’s, we all have a collection of some sort.

Organizing this collection of digital data and keeping track of what we have becomes more and more difficult as time goes on.  Storage cabinets, boxes, shelving units, entertainment centers and other furniture options are available at every store from Walgreens to Ikea and everyone has owned a few in hopes of keeping their collection organized, accessible and visually appealing.  No matter what you have to hold your data, it is most likely a temporary solution, as you’ll soon be purchasing that latest album, movie or video game.

What do we do next?
