New Year’s Resolutions With a Little Technical Assistance

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

Happy_New_YearAs we mentioned yesterday, the New Year is almost upon us and a few things are certain.  1) It is going to take some time to remember to write 2010, instead of 2009.  2) A boatload of people will start the year with a kiss and then a hangover.  3) Far too many people are going to make resolutions that they will abandon by the end of the month.  While I know we will no be able to help you with the first two items, I think we can definitely provide a little assistance on the third.  Well, at least we can help your PC help you.

As anyone who has tried before can attest, it is not easy to stick with a workout routine unless you have a bit of assistance.  For most people, this is a friend or maybe a trainer.  Unfortunately, friends can be unreliable and hiring a personal trainer can cost big bucks.  That is why we bring you some of the top ways to use technology to help you stay on track with your New Year’s Resolutions.

Great Deals Delivered to Your Inbox – Groupon.com

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

logoOur goal here at JumpstartMyPC.com is to help PC users get the most out of their computer.  We’ve mentioned this in many of our articles, but I often look back on this mission statement to make sure that we are providing you, the readers, with valuable, useful information.  I also make sure that the products, gadgets, software and sites we recommend are something that I would or have used myself for some time.  Today I bring you a site that I have been watching for some time.  Groupon.com

Groupon.com is a “daily-deal” type site, but with a twist.  The deal is a coupon for a local business that is only valid when there is enough interest from the group (thus the name Groupon).  Luckily, for the majority of our readers, Houston is one of the cities featured on the site.  Here is how it works.  A new “item” is posted each day and site visitors can decide whether they want the deal or not.  When enough people commit to a purchase of the item, “the deal is on!”  The time counts down (since the deal is only good for one day) and anyone else can jump in before it expires.  The idea is fabulous, but the execution is even better.  Here are some of the top reasons that Groupon.com is a must-add for your favorites:

How do You Protect Your Christmas Gifts?

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

Broken_ipod_touchWe are only 3 days away from Christmas morning now.  For most, this means time with family, friends and GIFTS!!!!  Let’s not kid ourselves.  If you have kids under the age of 15, they are really only concerned with what is behind all of the fancy, multi-colored paper under the tree.  If you are 15 or over, you are still pretty excited about what Santa is bringing you for Christmas.  You just have other things to worry about between now and then.

Let’s fast forward just a little bit and take a look at 3 months from now.  Your shiny new ___________ has been one of the best gifts you have ever received and you are really enjoying it when BAM!  It stops working.  What now?  Is there a warranty?  Does that warranty cover what just went wrong?  Talk about stress.  Not only do you have to hope that you are covered, but you also have to deal with the hassle of receipts, trips to the store, conversations with managers…  Who needs it?  Well, I think I have just the thing for you.  SquareTrade.com warranties.

Blister Pack 1 - Person Opening 0

Blister Pack 1 - Person Opening 0

Well, today is a BIG day.  According to every web site I have been on (that is a lot), today is the last day for you to make any online purchases and have any chance at all of receiving the item(s) before Christmas day.  For all you procrastinators out there, it is your time.  Time to step up or you’ll find yourself fighting the masses at the brick-n-mortar stores.  I do NOT envy you if you decide on the second option.

In case you have purchased or will need to purchase any holiday gifts for that “techie” in your family, there are some things you might want to be aware of, before you actually hand over the gift for unwrapping.  I, being a techie myself, was unaware that anyone had put any real thought into this, but it turns out that my friends over at CNET (fantastic site for any computer  lover) put together a little video for you to review.  Check out the video “Top 5 Worst Holiday Tech Gifts.”

Smart Tool for Smart Shoppers – LogicBuy.com

Friday, December 11th, 2009

logicbuy_feature_2-1Some estimates I have heard recently indicate that 50-75% of all shopping will be done online this year.  Now, those numbers are simply estimates until the holiday season is over, but I think the rest of the world is finally catching on to the deals and time savings that can be had from web browsing and not window browsing.   All I have to say is “it’s about time.”  For regular readers of the JumpstartMyPC.com blog, you are probably thinking “here he goes again with the online shopping talk.”  Some will stop reading right about now, but for those of you who still have shopping to do AND like to save money in the process, here is the latest discovery in my holiday shopping series.  I recently stumbled onto one of the best sites I have ever visited and I wanted to share it with you all.  The site is LogicBUY.com.

Surf Safely – Tips for Avoiding Scams and Traps

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

online-scams1It’s the holiday season and shopping is in full swing.  If you haven’t already finished (or started) your holiday shopping, you are going to have to get there soon.  Thanks to my family, I started all my shopping on Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving) and have slowly been adding to the stockpile of gifts.  The best part is, I didn’t have to leave the house.  I have done almost all of my shopping online.  STOP!  I know what some of you (or your friends and relatives) are thinking and I have heard it before.  “I’m afraid someone will steal my credit card information.” “I feel safer shopping in the store.”

While there might be some potential danger in shopping online, I feel that you are just as vulnerable when handing your credit card over to a waitress or the teenager behind the counter at Wal-Mart.  The truth is, you can get scammed or tricked anywhere.  It is up to you to take the proper precautions to protect yourself.  Learning to shop online safely is just the digital equivalent of doing so in person.  We are told to keep our eyes open, be alert and know where the exits are.  Women worry about keeping their purses secure and on them at all times.  Men check their back pocket or move their wallet to the front to avoid pickpockets and thieves.  So, what are the rules for surfing and shopping safely?

Flexible Holiday Shopping – Deals for People Who Don’t Know What They Want

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

This week it just seems impossible to get away from the Holiday Gift shopping discussion.  I finally decided this morning that I would just give in and make this week all about shopping and where to find some great deals.  After all, who wouldn’t want to know where to find the best bargains on the internet.

Yesterday, we talked about comparing Black Friday ads with online deals in our article titled Stay Home on Black Friday – Get Better Deals Now! Today we will focus on a different kind of bargain shopping.  In the event that you don’t know exactly what you are looking for, there are some sites that have great bargains on a range of items.  By watching/checking these sites regularly you might find a unique idea for that special someone this holiday season.

Stay Home on Black Friday – Get Better Deals Now!

black-friday-2A few weeks ago we began covering the 2009 Holiday Shopping season with our article Slow and Steady Wins the Holiday Shopping Race.  For those of you who read the article and have been receiving great information on bargains and Black Friday ads, Good Job!!!  You no doubt have your game plan for Black Friday outlined.  For those of you who haven’t even thought about all of this madness yet, don’t fear… We are here to help you get back on track.

If you are planning on heading out on Black Friday, you will  most likely purchase a newspaper with all of the local ads on Thursday.  This will give you and the family a chance to look through all of the ads and decide which store you should go to.  The only problem with this is you won’t be able to do much comparison shopping between Thursday and Friday, so do you know if you are even getting the best deal?  What if a web site had the same deal or better and could keep you from waking up at 3am and standing in the cold or rain (it is going to be 45 degrees on Friday morning in Houston, TX)?

Slow and Steady Wins the Holiday Shopping Race

Monday, November 9th, 2009

black-friday-electronicsHoliday Shopping is upon us and last week we focused on creating wishlists so friends and family would know what to get you.  Now it is time to look on the other side of the wall and focus on the gift buying.  Traditionally, holiday shopping has been done between Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve.  Many shoppers begin their conquest the day after Thanksgiving and have managed to create the monster we now call Black Friday.  I honestly don’t remember this being such a big day 10 or 15 years ago, but NOW!!

Black Friday has become THE premier shopping day of the year.  Retailers, in their infinite wisdom, have made it impossible to have a Thanksgiving day without the rustle of papers and bargain-hunting conversations.  Shoppers now debate an afternoon nap and then a trip to the Best Buy to stand in line til the wee hours of the morning, just waiting for the doors to open and the madness to begin.  Who can blame them?  The prices are amazing and, given the current economic trouble, we would all like to save as much of our hard-earned cash as possible.  Luckily, Black Friday has grown to include a larger audience and the internet is now a prime shopping location for those who aren’t looking to lose sleep on a perfectly good day off.
